MNRE Secretary Highlights Bioenergy as Key Player in Energy Transition

Bioenergy is a type of renewable energy derived from biological sources such as plants and organic waste. It can be produced through various processes such as combustion, fermentation, and gasification.

In collaboration with UNIDO and the Global Environment Facility, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy hosted a workshop on "Bioenergy for Sustainable Development: Case Studies and Best Practises" in New Delhi on May 12. The training was held in conjunction with the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav (AKAM).

During the inaugural session, Bhupinder Singh Bhalla, Secretary MNRE, discussed the importance of energy transition, the country's efforts in this regard, and the role of bioenergy in this regard. Dinesh Jagdale, Joint Secretary (Bioenergy), MNRE, emphasized the growing global relevance of bioenergy and the importance of such seminars in igniting the sector.

Representatives from industry, project developers, state implementing agencies, financial institutions, and officials from several stakeholder Ministries of the Government of India attended the event.

The workshop included different sessions on Case studies of CBG Plants based on press mud & segregated urban food waste, Case studies on medium and small-size biogas plants, Case studies of Biomass Plants including innovative biomass supply chain management system and pellet manufacturing, Code of Practice of BIS standards, a Panel discussion on the financing of waste-to-energy bio-methanation projects & significance of innovations in the growth of the bio methanation sector.

The case studies focused on practices applied by various types of bioenergy plants across the country. During the panel talks, the importance of finding innovative ways to finance the construction of a biomass supply chain was emphasized in order to increase the reliability of the bioenergy sector.

Bioenergy has the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and provide a sustainable energy source. However, its production and use must be carefully managed to ensure it is environmentally sustainable.
