MoHUA Undertakes Projects Worth Rs 114.28 crore for Rejuvenation of Water Bodies Under AMRUT Scheme

In the last five years, 31 projects totaling 114.28 crore have been undertaken under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT), with 20 water bodies rejuvenated. On October 1, 2021, the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation 2.0 (AMRUT 2.0) was launched.

The mission aims to make cities 'water secure' by implementing water-circular economy projects that focus on universal coverage of functional water tap connections, water source conservation, rejuvenation of water bodies and wells, recycle/reuse of treated used water, and rainwater harvesting.

AMRUT 2.0 has so far approved 690 water body rejuvenation projects worth Rs 1,628.78 crore in 14 States/UTs. In the month of July 2022, 279 projects worth Rs 277.69 crore were proposed in the State Water Action Plans-1 (SWAP-1) submitted by 04 States/UTs, and 411 projects worth Rs 1,351.09 crore were proposed in the Special State Water Action Plans (SSWAPs) submitted by 11 States/UTs.

AMRUT funds are not released project by project. Similarly, Central Assistance (CA) is released against approved SWAP/SSWAP under AMRUT 2.0. So far, Rs 709.72 crore of Central Assistance has been released for SWAP-1 projects such as water supply, sewerage, and septage management, park and green space development, and water body revitalization.

Furthermore, Rs 51.67 crore of Central Assistance has also been released against SSWAP, which includes Water Bodies rejuvenation projects.

About AMRUT Scheme:

PM Narendra Modi launched the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) under the Government of India in June 2015. The AMRUT scheme is an initiative to improve the quality of life in urban areas by providing basic civic amenities to the poor and disadvantaged.

It is the first focused national water Mission, with 500 cities and 60 percent of the urban population covered. Through the implementation of urban revitalization projects, the AMRUT Scheme focuses on establishing an infrastructure for ensuring adequate sewage networks and water supply in urban areas.

Rajasthan was the first state to submit a State Annual Action Plan under the AMRUT scheme. Other schemes include the Swachh Bharat Mission and Housing for All and the local state schemes related to water supply, sewerage and infrastructure can also be linked to the AMRUT scheme.
