Mother Dairy Calcutta to be Renamed as "Bangla Dairy"

On Wednesday, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced that Mother Dairy would be renamed "Bangla Dairy."

In news conference at Nabanna, Mamata Banerjee said, “Mother Dairy Calcutta, which comes under the state government, will now be rechristened as Bangla Dairy”.

According to experts, the point is to maintain parity with the Biswa Bangla brand and at the same time create a brand difference with "Mother Dairy", which is under the central government.

Further Banerjee said, "The state is sufficient in milk production. Then why should we not set up Bangla Dairy”.

The Chief Minister added: "I have given directions in this regard repeatedly. Now direction has been given to the Chief Secretary and principal Secretary of the Animal Resource Development Department to take up the issue. It would take some time to implement the same."

"All sorts of dairy related products would be sold here," said Banerjee adding that guidelines have also been put in place to ensure sufficient egg and fish production in the state. Initiatives have also been taken to further promote poultry production among rural people.

It should be mentioned that the Minister's decision to allow sweet shops to remain open four hours a day during the lockdown in the first wave of the Covid pandemic has made it possible to control the losses of Rs.1 crore per day of dairy farmers about 30 to 35 lakh liters of milk is not wasted.

The state's total milk production is 140 lakh litre per day. Confectionery is one of the two main consumption items. Every day, about 50,000 liters of milk must be supplied to confectionery stores across the state. While the second largest consumers of milk in the state are tea houses and other restaurants, which supply about 20 to 25 lakh liters of milk per day.
