Mumbai Rain Updates: IMD Issues Red Alert, Predicts Heavy to Extremely Heavy Rainfall Today; Residents Asked To Stay Indoors

The government of Maharashtra has declared a public holiday in Mumbai today (2^nd July 2019) after the India Meteorological Department (IMD’s) prediction of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in the city. Today all schools, colleges and even offices will remain closed. In addition people have been advised to avoid leaving their homes to avoid any mishap.

According to reports, heavy rainfall lashed Mumbai yesterday (1^st July 2019), disrupting air as well as rail services. A SpiceJet flight to Jaipur overshot the main runway in the midnight. However, no injuries or causalities were reported. As per the latest update, as many as 52 flights have been cancelled due to heavy rainfall.

Local trains, which is said to be the lifeline for Mumbai's 20 million inhabitants, have been affected badly with many suburban & long-distance trains being cancelled. After the Maharashtra government announced a public holiday in Mumbai and its suburbs, CM Devendra Fadnavis suggested people to stay indoors as the weather office has issued a red alert in Mumbai today, warning of heavy rain.

Streets in Mumbai regularly flood during the monsoon - from June till September or sometimes October. Since Monday the city has received 375 millimetres of rain, which is the highest over a 24-hour period in a decade.

Today is a public holiday in Mumbai and neighbouring districts of Mumbai Suburban & Thane. While schools & colleges will remain shut, many private companies have asked their employees to work from home.

1. Maharashtra government has asked people not to step out of their homes as the weather will become worse today. Fadnavis's office tweeted - "Because of heavy rainfall forecast in Mumbai even today by IMD, People are advised to stay indoors unless there is any emergency".

2. State government said that all government offices except essential services will remain close for today.

3. Indian Navy has deployed numerous teams to provide relief to rain-hit & stranded people in Kurla area.

4. Mumbai airport’s main runway was closed last night. Due to this, at least 54 flights have been diverted to other cities like Ahmedabad & Bengaluru. The secondary runway is functional.

5. The city will get more downpours in the next 24 - 48 hours. A red alert has also been issued by IMD for today while an orange warning - of less intense rain has been issued for Wednesday to Friday.

6. Till so far 27 people have been killed in Mumbai.
