Need to Adopt High Yielding Varieties of Rice Suitable for Organic Conditions to Raise Productivity

The ICAR-National Organic Farming Research Institute, Tadong and Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), East Sikkim jointly organized a “Field Day on Rice” including the crop cutting experiment at KVK, East Sikkim, Ranipool on 20th November 2019.

The Chief Guest, Dr. R.K. Avasthe, Joint Director, ICAR-NOFRI highlighted the importance of quality seed in agriculture. He urged the farmers for undertaking the potential organic production technologies developed by the Institute. He stressed on the need for adopting the high yielding varieties of rice suitable for the organic conditions to raise the state’s rice productivity.

The Guest of Honor, Smt. Rachna Gurung, Deputy Director, Agriculture (East) cum Deputy Project Director, ATMA (East) appreciated the ICAR’s support and cooperation in carrying out the various field activities.

Dr. P.K. Pathak, Incharge, KVK, East Sikkim, Ranipool & Programme Coordinator briefed about the KVK’s various activities being carried out at the farmers’ field.

The farmers were demonstrated the various rice trials undertaken at the KVK followed by demonstration of rice variety - RCPL-412. The crop cutting results of RCPL-412 showed seed yield of 5440 kg/ha. The variety is suitable for both upland and irrigated conditions of Sikkim for timely sown conditions up to an altitude of 1,300 masl. A group of 50 farmers from different locations of East Sikkim participated in the field day.
