Netizens pay tribute to Masala King, MDH owner Mahashay Dharampal

Owner and face of MDH (Mahashian Di Hatti) Masala ads, Dharampal Gulati passed away at the age of 97, on December 3, 2020. Popularly known as "Mahashay" and “Spice King”, of India and was also featured in the brand's '100 years' celebration campaign.

Owner and face of MDH (Mahashian Di Hatti) Masala ads, Dharampal Gulati passed away at the age of 97, on December 3, 2020. Popularly known as "Mahashay" and “Spice King”, of India and was also featured in the brand's '100 years' celebration campaign.  

Union defence minister Rajnath Singh, railway minister Piyush Goyal, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, Delhi deputy CM Manish Sisodia was among many to offer condolences on Twitter.

As per reports, he had been in a Mata Chanan Devi Hospital in Delhi for weeks and died of a cardiac arrest early at 5.38 am on 3 December. 

Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal tweeted, “Dharm Pal Ji was very inspiring personality. He dedicated his life for the society. God bless his soul.”

Union railway minister Piyush Goyal paid tribute to Gulati on Twitter in Hindi, “Extremely saddened by the demise of Mahashay Dharampal Gulati, who spread the fragrance of Indian spices in the whole world. He set an example through his self-reliance. May he attain salvation.”

Gulati born on March 27, 1923, in undivided India in Sialkot (Pakistan), he was a school dropout and joined his father’s spices business at a young age.  

MDH was among the first few companies to launch advertising campaigns in the year1948. It launched its first television advertisement in 1984 featuring Dharampal along with veteran actors Shafi Inamdar & Neena Gupta. Thereafter Gulati appeared in the brand’s iconic “Asli Masale Sach Sach…MDH, MDH” ads and other campaigns, in his signature red turban, dressed in an Indian kurta pyjama, flashing a smile in his ads. Gulati was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India's third-highest civilian award in the year 2019.

All the television advertisements of MDH featured Dharam Pal as the brand ambassador for his company. Even Gulati was reportedly India's highest-paid consumer products CEO in 2017 when he took home more than Rs 21 crore as salary. 

As a part of their expansion programme, company has established large fully automatic manufacturing plants at Delhi, Gurgaon for three plants of spices, Papad and Export Unit, Nagaur (Rajasthan) two plants of Methi and spices and Sojat (Rajasthan). Branches have been even set up at Ghaziabad (U.P.) Amritsar & Ludhiana (Punjab).

Today MDH spices and blends are popular not just in India but also across the world and the products are being exported to the Europe, United States of America, Canada, United Kingdom, South East Asia, Japan, U.A.E. & Saudi Arabia and the company has its own offices in London, U.K. and a state of art manufacturing unit at Sharjah, U.A.E.

Company MDH (Mahashian Di Hatti) was founded by his late father Mahashay Chunni Lal Gulati and then at a very young age by his son Dharampal. One of the most inspiring entrepreneurs who never forgot his roots and culture R.I.P Mahashay Dharampal Gulati the iconic CEO of MDH spices.
