Over 4 lakh Affected in Assam Flood, State Situation Grim; Heavy Rainfall Predicted for Next Few Days

The flood situation in North-East State, Assam deteriorated on Thursday (11th July 2019) as it spread to 17 districts affecting over 4.23 lakh people. Many rivers in the state are flowing above the danger level. According to the report of Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA),  749 villages under 41 revenue circles in 17 districts has been affected in the second wave of flood so far and 3,435 hectares of crop areas have been damaged. There is no report of flood causalities.

The flood situation in North-East State, Assam deteriorated on Thursday (11th July 2019) as it spread to 17 districts affecting over 4.23 lakh people. Many rivers in the state are flowing above the danger level.

According to the report of Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA),  749 villages under 41 revenue circles in 17 districts has been affected in the second wave of flood so far and 3,435 hectares of crop areas have been damaged. There is no report of flood causalities.

National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) personnel have been deployed in the districts of Dhemaji, Lakhimpur and Bongaigaon, Barpeta, Morigaon and Dibrugarh for the rescue operation.

According to India Meteorological Department (IMD) report, the situation could become worse in the northeastern states including Assam due to the heavy rainfall in the next few days.

Around 62,400 people have been affected due to flood in Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Biswanath, Barpeta, Chirang, Golaghat, Jorhat and Dibrugarh districts.

At least 203 people have been rescued and taken to shelter where the authorities are running five relief camps and distribution centers in two districts,  according to ASDMA report.  

Huge erosions have been reported  at different places of Sonitpur, Udalguri, Jorhat and Barpeta districts. Dhansiri river at Numaligarh , Jia Bharali at NT Road Crossing in Sonitpur, Puthimari at NH Road  and the Beki at Road Bridge in Barpeta are flowing above the danger marks, said ASDMA report.  

According to IMD, North Eastern states - Assam,  Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura are likely to experience heavy rainfall to very heavy rainfall till 12th July 2019, which may worsen the situation.
