In a significant move to mark World Environment Day, PM Narendra Modi inaugurated the #Plant4Mother campaign by planting a Peepal tree sapling at Buddha Jayanti Park, New Delhi. This initiative aims to inspire global participation in tree planting as a tribute to our mothers and Mother Earth.

Highlighting the nurturing role of both Mother Earth and human mothers, Prime Minister Modi urged people worldwide to plant trees as symbols of love, respect, and honor for their mothers. He also called on individuals to pledge their commitment to protecting trees and the environment.

In support of the #Plant4Mother campaign, both Central and State Government Departments, along with local bodies, will identify public spaces suitable for tree planting. This initiative aligns with the theme of World Environment Day 2024, which focuses on halting and reversing land degradation, building drought resilience, and preventing desertification.

The government has set an ambitious target of planting 80 crore trees by September and 140 crores by March 2025. This massive effort will involve a collective approach, engaging individuals, community-based organizations, and various government departments.

The Department of School Education has mobilized Eco-clubs in 7.5 lakh schools to promote the #Plant4Mother message. Summer camps will incorporate this theme into their experiential learning activities, reflecting the principles of the New Education Policy. The emphasis will be on understanding the vital role trees play in nurturing life and the deep connection between trees, mothers, and Mother Earth.

The Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change’s Environmental Information, Awareness, Capacity Building, and Livelihood Programme (EIACP) Centres, along with institutions like BSI, ZSI, ICFRE, and NMNH, will actively participate in raising awareness and conducting tree plantation drives under the #Plant4Mother initiative.

Additionally, other Ministries and Departments are contributing to this campaign. The Ministry of Youth Affairs is engaging young people through the MY Bharat initiative, while the Ministry of External Affairs is extending the campaign’s reach globally, encouraging international participation.

Union Minister for Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, and the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, were also present at the event, showing their support for this significant environmental campaign.
