PMO Returns ‘Money Order’ of Nasik Farmer who got Meager Amount for Onions

The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) has returned a money-order sent by a farmer in Maharashtra's Nashik district, who obtained merely Rs 1,064 after selling 750 kg of onions.

Sanjay Sathe, a farmer who hails from Niphad tehsil of Nashik district, had sent all his earnings from onion sale in the wholesale market to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 29 November as a mark of protest.

Few days back, the local post office told him that the money-order was not accepted by the PMO. Sathe said that on Monday he went to the Indian Post office in Niphad and received Rs 1,064.  He added "My only purpose was to prompt the government to take some actions to ease the economic stress faced by the farmers due to crashed prices".  

It must be recalled that the Nasik farmer, who had taken his onion crop to wholesale market in Niphad, had obtained a worthless rate of Rs 1.40/kg. His brave step of donating the money to the PMO through a money-order had made headlines in all leading newspapers as well as online news portals.

Sathe clarified that "I just wanted to draw the government's attention to farmers’ problems. And I am not connected with any political party". He hopes that the Central and state governments will take some measures so that onion growers could earn more.
