Punjab CM announces jobs for family members of farmers who died during protests in Delhi

Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh said his government would provide employment to the family members of the 76 farmers who died at the Delhi border during the protest against three farm laws. 

Speaking on the social media site Twitter during the 20th edition of 'AskCaptain' live event, the Chief Minister slammed the central government for introducing' without a debate in Parliament and then changes to farm sector laws. 

‘I have received a notification that during the protest against three farm laws, 76 farmers passed away. I announce today that we will provide government employment to a member of the Punjab family who died in protest at the border of Delhi,’ he added. 

‘In this region, is there a Constitution? Under Schedule 7, agriculture is a state issue. Without a discussion in Parliament, why did the Centre change it? In Lok Sabha, they passed it as they had more supporters. It happened in chaos in Rajya Sabha, as they feared things might go wrong,’ he said. 

As the eleventh round of talks between representatives of protesting farmers and Central Ministers ended without any conclusion on Friday, a stalemate remained. 

During the meeting, the government told farmers' unions that ‘if they have a better idea, they should come otherwise they can rethink their proposal to delay law enforcement for nearly one and a half years.’ 

On Thursday, however, the protesting farmers' unions opposed the plan to place new farm laws on hold for nearly 18 months and insisted on their offer to revoke the three laws. 

After the conference, Surjeet Singh Phul, state president of BKU Krantikari (Punjab), said that no date for the next round of talks had been scheduled. 

Since November 26, farmers have been protesting against the three newly enacted farm laws on the various boundaries of the national capital - the Farmers' Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020; the Basic Commodities Act, 2020and Farm Services Act 2020; and the Farmers Empowerment and Security Agreement on Price Guarantee.
