Saffron Promotion: Jammu & Kashmir seeks technical assistance from Spain

Jammu and Kashmir government sought cooperation and technical assistance from Spanish Government for the promotion of saffron at international level during a meeting between J&K Minister for Agriculture, Ghulam Nabi Lone Hanjura and Spanish Agriculture officials.

During their meeting, Hanjura briefed them about the high quality and uniqueness found in Saffron grown in Jammu and Kashmir.

Jammu & Kashmir is the place where saffron is predominantly cultivated in India and nearly 7.3 percent of the world saffron is produced from this state. Often called as “red gold”, it is the most expensive spice in the world.

Jammu & Kashmir produces 2,128 kilograms saffron per year. But during last few years, the production is gradually declining due to uncertain climatic conditions and the insufficient irrigation facilities in these areas.
