Sikkim CM Lays Foundation Stone For The Sikkim Organic Agriculture University (SOAU)

Sikkim Chief Minister, Prem Singh Tamang laid the foundation stone for the Sikkim Organic Agriculture University (SOAU) at Mondegaon in Soreng district on August 13, 2023.

Sikkim, which recognized itself as India’s first organic state in 2003, has introduced this establishment which will also improve its economic activities. CM Tamang has stated that SOAU will be a center of excellence where subjects and matters related to organic farming will be educated.

• SOAU has a view to providing instructions, training, and research in specialized fields of agriculture, finance and management, law, and various branches of Science and Technology

• It aims to make provisions for research, advancement, and dissemination of knowledge to the youths easily

• It also focuses on providing higher education with skilled and entrepreneur courses in Sikkim through world-class infrastructure

  and international networking which shall catalyze not only the surrounding region but the State as a whole.

Sikkim CM shared his instance of meeting over 500 students in Dehradun who were doing undergraduate and post-graduate courses in agriculture, horticulture, and forestry. Therefore, the introduction of SOAU in Sikkim will encourage students to pursue these courses in the state itself, without having the need to travel outside.

He further added that SOAU will become a hub of economic activities, generating employment opportunities for the local people once the infrastructure is developed within a year. 

India’s Other Organic Agriculture University, GOAU

India has a functional organic agriculture university named Gujarat Organic Agricultural University (GOAU) which was established in the year 2017 by the Government of Gujarat.  It provides the most diverse educational, research, and extension hub for organic agriculture.
