Subsidy Announced for Goa Fishermen as The Government Prioritizes Fisheries Sector

Fishermen in the state can now get the fishing gear and accessories needed for fish vending at a discounted price through two programs announced by the directorate of fisheries.

Registered with the directorate of fisheries, fish vendors will be able to purchase fish vending crates, gloves, insulated boxes, platforms to keep tools, weighing balance, choppers, stool, and other equipment related to fish sales.

Any beneficiary belonging to the general category is eligible for the grant of a 50% subsidy limited to Rs 10,000 on a unit cost of Rs 20,000. The beneficiary belonging to SC/ST/women category is eligible for the grant of 60% subsidy limited to Rs 12,000 on a unit cost of Rs 20,000.

From the registered dealers, the beneficiary shall produce the bills for the purchase of accessories required for fish vending. And, once every three years, the scheme can be availed.

The directorate of fisheries under the other schemes will offer a subsidy for the purchase or construction of new fishing craft of fewer than 26 feet for fishing in the inland waters of Goa. Barrier nets, stake nets, and accessories, and outboard motors of 2HP and 5HP for fitment on the fishing canoe below 26 feet can be purchased.

The beneficiary shall be eligible for financial assistance for only one fishing canoe of fewer than 26 feet and must have a valid license certificate and net registration certificate issued by the department of fisheries to be eligible.

After every 7 years, the scheme can be availed against the replacement of his/her existing canoe.

Centre considers fisheries as a priority sector: Rupala

Meanwhile, on Sunday, Parshottam Rupala, Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying said that the central government has considered the fisheries sector as a priority sector. The ongoing Sagar Parikrama program is organized for the fishermen and empowers them to contribute to the economic growth of the nation.

Besides this, he also said he heard about the problems faced by a few Kannada fishermen in repaying loans taken from private lenders at immoderate interest as well and advised fishermen to avail of Kisan Credit Card by which fisherman can get loans up to ₹1.6 lakhs without any collateral security.
