Syngenta and FMC Revolutionize Rice Farming in Asia with Groundbreaking Grass Weed Control Technology

This cutting-edge solution introduces Tetflupyrolimet, an innovative active ingredient discovered and pioneered by FMC with invaluable support from Syngenta during its development specifically for rice cultivation. Notably, Tetflupyrolimet represents the first herbicide in over three decades to possess a completely novel mode of action (DHODH – HRAC Group 28). Its introduction offers promising prospects for farmers who have been grappling with weed resistance, providing them with renewed optimism and effective means to combat this persistent challenge.

With Tetflupyrolimet, rice farmers can now enhance both the yield and quality of their crops through season-long control of crucial grass weeds. These weeds pose a significant threat as they compete with rice plants for vital resources such as water, fertilizer, light, and space. Additionally, they can harbour pests and diseases that adversely impact rice farming. However, the introduction of this technology brings several advantages. Firstly, Tetflupyrolimet can be applied at low rates, ensuring crop safety while effectively combating grass weeds. Moreover, its ease of application extends to both traditional transplanted rice and direct-seeded rice, making it adaptable to various farming systems. This remarkable innovation paves the way for the wider adoption of modern, ecologically friendly agricultural practices in rice cultivation.

Ioana Tudor, Global Head of Marketing at Syngenta Crop Protection, expressed her enthusiasm for the potential impact of this innovation, stating, "This breakthrough has the power to revolutionize rice farming, driving a significant improvement in both yield and quality of harvests. It directly addresses the pressing issue of weed resistance, which has been a growing challenge for farmers. With the potential to transform the lives of millions of rice farmers, we at Syngenta are thrilled about the possibilities this new technology holds for enhancing global rice production sustainability."

The importance of rice production cannot be overstated, as it serves as a lifeline for approximately 150 million farmers worldwide. These dedicated farmers contribute to one-fifth of the global nutritional energy supply. Particularly in underdeveloped nations, rice stands out as the most crucial food crop, providing over 30 percent of the total calorific intake. Additionally, rice cultivation plays a vital role in generating employment opportunities in rural areas, thereby bolstering local economies.

Under the agreed terms, both Syngenta and FMC will collaborate to bring Tetflupyrolimet-based products to key Asian rice markets. Syngenta will take charge of registering and commercializing Tetflupyrolimet in China, which happens to be the largest rice market globally. In addition to China, Syngenta will also market rice products incorporating Tetflupyrolimet combinations in India, Vietnam, Indonesia, Japan, and South Korea.

On the other hand, FMC will register and commercialize Tetflupyrolimet, along with a range of other products, in all of these countries except China, where they will focus on rice combinations specifically. Syngenta will maintain its exclusive marketing rights for Tetflupyrolimet solely for rice in Bangladesh. This strategic distribution approach ensures comprehensive coverage and availability of these innovative solutions across the targeted Asian rice markets.
