Training : Pig Farming & Value Addition of Milk
To give much needed impetus to diversification, Directorate of Extension Education and College of Dairy Science and Technology, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, GADVASU, Ludhiana organized one week duration twin training programmes on Pig farming and Value Addition of Milk, simultaneously for livestock entrepreneurs of Punjab and other states from 15 January to 19 January, 2018.
To give much needed impetus to diversification, Directorate of Extension Education and College of Dairy Science and Technology, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, GADVASU, Ludhiana organized one week duration twin training programmes on Pig farming and Value Addition of Milk, simultaneously for livestock entrepreneurs of Punjab and other states from 15 January to 19 January, 2018.
A total of 60 trainees including 3 female participants attended the highly specialized programme on pig farming that was especially formulated to apprise the livestock farmers. Dr. S.K. Kansal, HoD of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension Education informed that various theoretical and practical aspects of pig farming were covered by the experts of the university during the training. He added that Veterinary University also publishes books and magazines for livestock farmers in Punjabi and English and have also developed video CDs and a mobile app on dairy farming "Precision Dairy Farming" for benefiting the livestock farmers.
A total of 14 trainees including 3 female participants attended the technically designed training Programme on “Value Addition of Milk” at College of Dairy Science and Technology, GADVASU. Dr. A. K. Puniya, Dean, College of Dairy Science and Technology cum Course Director of the training programme apprised the trainees about the facilities available for farmers in various departments of the college pertaining to value addition of milk.

The training was technically designed and provided practical training on manufacture of seven milk products viz. milk cake, paneer, whey drink, dahi, lassi, mozzarella cheese and sterilized flavoured milk. He advised the farmers to convert milk into milk products so as to improve the profit levels as compared to the sale of liquid milk. H K Verma, Director Extension Education, GADVASU appreciated the efforts of farmers for showing their keen interest in these trainings and said that veterinary university is continuously working to improve the socio-economic status of the livestock owners through various training programmes.
Pig farming is gaining impetus in the state and can be a good source of earning in the near future. The value addition of milk could help to enhance the economic well-being of the large number of people in Punjab. Further he added that GADVASU will confer "Chief Minister awards" in coming Pashu Palan Mela (March, 2018) to the progressive livestock farmers in the state in categories of Dairy, Piggery, Poultry, Goat, Fisheries and value addition.
These awards will boost the motivation of livestock farmers and livestock sector in the state. The Directorate of Extension Education, GADVASU, Ludhiana has invited applications for "Chief Minister awards", 2018 from farmers undertaking different aspects of livestock farming by 31-01-2018.
