A combination of low-pressure systems and western disturbances is anticipated to bring thunderstorms, cold waves, dense fog, and frost to various parts of the country. Here are the details:

Low Pressure Area over Southwest Bay of Bengal

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported a well-marked low-pressure area over the Westcentral Bay of Bengal, which moved towards the Southwest Bay off the coasts of South Andhra Pradesh and North Tamil Nadu as of December 23, 2024. This system is expected to shift further west-southwestward and impact the north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh coasts by December 24.

The low-pressure system and associated weather patterns are likely to bring the following rainfall activities:

Western Disturbance Activity

A cyclonic circulation over north Pakistan, coupled with an induced low-pressure area over northwest Rajasthan, is influencing northern India.

• Light to moderate rainfall/snowfall is expected over the Western Himalayan Region on December 24.

• Another active western disturbance from December 26 will interact with easterly winds, enhancing rainfall and snowfall across the Western Himalayan Region and adjoining plains. Peak activity is predicted for December 27-28.

Temperature Trends and Cold Wave Warnings

The IMD observed a rise in minimum temperatures across northwest and central India over the past 24 hours, while parts of the south and east experienced slight dips.

Cold wave conditions are likely in Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Jammu-Kashmir regions from December 24-26. Ground frost may also affect isolated pockets in these areas.

Dense Fog Forecast 

Dense fog conditions will prevail during late-night and early morning hours across several regions, including Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Delhi, and northeastern states, through December 26.

Delhi/NCR Weather Forecast 

Residents of Delhi/NCR can expect a mix of cloudy and clear skies with occasional light rain and smoggy conditions.

Residents are advised to stay alert for dense fog and cold wave conditions, particularly in northern and hilly regions, and take precautions against low visibility while traveling. Fishermen are urged to refrain from venturing into the affected coastal areas due to rough sea conditions.
