India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a mix of weather conditions across the country. The Western Himalayan region is set to experience snowfall, while parts of southern India, including Tamil Nadu and Kerala, are likely to receive rainfall. Dense fog and cold wave conditions are expected in the northern plains, with smog and foggy mornings in Delhi-NCR. Here’s a detailed forecast 

Weather Systems and Rainfall Forecast

1. Western Disturbance in Himalayan Region and Northern India

  • Western Himalayan Region:

    • Scattered rainfall/snowfall is likely till 20th January due to a western disturbance.

    • Intensity and distribution will increase between 21st and 23rd January, with peak activity on 22nd and 23rd January, caused by the merging of a fresh system.

    • Isolated thunderstorms are expected in Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, and Himachal Pradesh on 21st January.

  • Plains of North India:

    • Isolated to scattered rainfall is predicted over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, North Rajasthan, and West Uttar Pradesh from 21st to 23rd January.

 2. Rainfall Forecast in Southern India

  • Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal:

    • Light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms likely on 18th and 19th January, with isolated heavy rainfall in some areas.

  • Kerala & Mahe:

    • Moderate rainfall and thunderstorms on 19th January, with isolated heavy rainfall expected.

Temperature, Cold Wave, and Fog Warnings

Temperatures are expected to remain steady in most parts of Northwest and Central India, with a slight rise in some regions. However, places like Himachal Pradesh may experience cold wave conditions. Dense fog is also likely in areas such as Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh during the night and early morning, which could make travel difficult. Be cautious and plan accordingly!

  • Northwest India: No significant temperature change over the next 48 hours, followed by a 2-3°C rise.

  • Gujarat: Similar warming trends over the next 48 hours, stabilizing afterward.

  • Central & East India and Maharashtra: Stable temperatures for the next 5 days.

2. Cold Wave Warnings

  • Himachal Pradesh: Isolated cold wave conditions expected on 18th and 19th January.

3. Dense Fog Warnings

  • Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan:

    • Dense to very dense fog likely during the night and early morning on 18th and 19th January.

  • Himachal Pradesh & Uttarakhand: Foggy conditions persist till 20th January.

IMD predicts clear to partly cloudy skies in Delhi-NCR. Dense fog is expected in the mornings and late at night, with light winds from the northwest. Smog and shallow fog are likely in the evening and night, with moderate fog in the mornings.
