Weather Update: Heavy Rains to Lash Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, Cold Wave Sweeps Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and Rajasthan

IMD forecasts heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Rayalaseema, along with severe cold waves in northern states and dense fog in parts of India over the coming days.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has released its latest weather forecast, predicting diverse weather patterns across the country in the coming days. From heavy rainfall in southern states to severe cold wave conditions in northern regions and dense fog in parts of the plains and northeast.

Weather Systems in Play

  1. Low-Pressure Area: A low-pressure area persists over the southwest Bay of Bengal, accompanied by a cyclonic circulation extending up to middle tropospheric levels. It is expected to intensify and move west-northwest towards the Tamil Nadu coast over the next two days.

  2. Western Disturbances: A Western Disturbance is currently observed as a trough in the middle and upper tropospheric westerlies along Long. 68°E, north of Lat. 25°N, will likely affect the western Himalayan region starting December 18, 2024.

Rainfall Forecast and Warnings

IMD has predicted widespread rainfall activity across southern and coastal regions of India over the next few days. Tamil Nadu, Rayalaseema, and Coastal Andhra Pradesh are set to experience isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall, particularly on December 18 and 19, as a low-pressure system intensifies over the southwest Bay of Bengal. Light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms is also expected in Kerala, Puducherry, and parts of Odisha, signaling a wet spell ahead.

Dense fog is expected to prevail in northern and eastern parts, potentially affecting visibility, while frost warnings have been issued for select areas.

IMD has predicted clear skies for Delhi and NCR over the next four days, accompanied by light winds and fluctuating fog conditions. While mornings and evenings may witness moderate to dense fog, afternoons are expected to be relatively clear with calm winds. Residents are advised to prepare for smoggy nights and reduced visibility during early hours.
