India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a mix of weather events this week, including heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, dense fog, and cold wave conditions across various regions. As low-pressure systems and a western disturbance interact, parts of India will experience significant temperature drops, hailstorms, and even ground frost. Here are the details

Low Pressure Systems and Rainfall

Bay of Bengal and Coastal Areas

A well-marked low-pressure system over the southwest Bay of Bengal near South Andhra Pradesh and North Tamil Nadu coasts persists and is expected to weaken gradually within the next 24 hours.

  • Rainfall Forecast:
    • Coastal Andhra Pradesh: Light to moderate rainfall with isolated heavy showers on 26th December.

    • Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal: Light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning on 26th December.

Western Disturbance

A fresh western disturbance is likely to impact northern and central India, bringing significant rainfall and snowfall.

  • Rain/Snow Forecast:

    • Western Himalayan Region: Scattered to fairly widespread rain and snowfall on 27th and 28th December.

    • Other Regions: Isolated rainfall with thunderstorms in Rajasthan, Gujarat, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and West Uttar Pradesh on 26th and 27th December.

  • Hailstorm Warning:

    • Hailstorms are expected in Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, West Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, and parts of Maharashtra on 27th December.

Current Conditions

  • Minimum temperatures have dipped below 0°C in parts of Jammu, Kashmir & Ladakh.

  • Cold wave conditions persist in isolated pockets of Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and Jammu-Kashmir.

Forecast

  • A 2°C drop in minimum temperatures is expected over Northwest India during the next 2 days, followed by a gradual rise.

  • Cold wave warnings are in place for Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and Jammu & Kashmir on 26th December.

Dense fog is likely during late night and early morning hours in the following regions:
