The West Bengal government on Thursday called for a total suspension of ferry service in the Sundarban areas on October 23 and 24 in view of the IMD forecast of severe weather activity in the region.

Depression over Northwest Bay of Bengal
According to reports, the depression over Northwest Bay of Bengal off Odisha coast moved north-northeastwards with a speed of 14 kmph during past 06 hours and lay centred at 1730 hrs IST of today. It is very likely to move north-northeastwards and cross West Bengal & adjoining Bangladesh coasts, as Depression between Sagar Islands (West Bengal) and Khepupara (Bangladesh) over Sundarbans by 23rd October afternoon.
Alert over Coastal Side
The government alerted that fishing boats should not go to sea from 22nd to 24th October and those at sea should return to coast before 22nd October morning.
Earlier on Wednesday, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) had predicted widespread heavy to very heavy rainfall over coastal districts of West Bengal from October 22 to 24 during the Durga Puja days. Hence people are advised to be careful and alert.
