IMD Forecasts Heavy Rainfall Across Multiple States in India as Monsoon Withdraws

India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall across several regions of India over the coming days. This forecast is accompanied by the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from parts of Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Punjab.

The IMD predicts heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places over Gujarat, West Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Coastal Karnataka, and North Interior Karnataka. Additionally, heavy rainfall is expected over regions such as East Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Konkan & Goa, Assam & Meghalaya, Odisha, Rayalaseema, Kerala, and Mahe.

Furthermore, extreme heavy rainfall is likely over Coastal Karnataka and Konkan & Goa between September 24 and 26, while isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in Gujarat from September 24 to 27.

South Peninsular India

In the southern regions, the IMD predicts fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall over the next week. Coastal Karnataka, Lakshadweep, Kerala, and Mahe will experience this weather, with heavier rains expected in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Rayalaseema. Some areas, such as Coastal Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, are forecast to experience isolated extremely heavy rainfall.

West and Central India

Western and central regions are also expected to see significant rainfall, especially in Konkan & Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, and Gujarat. Extremely heavy rainfall is likely in these regions from September 24 to 26, especially over Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada. Scattered rainfall will also continue in Saurashtra and Kutch over the next seven days. Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha in Central India will witness widespread moderate rainfall, with isolated areas experiencing heavy downpours.

East and Northeast India

In the eastern and northeastern parts of India, states such as Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, and parts of West Bengal will experience persistent rainfall over the next seven days. Assam and Meghalaya are expected to receive very heavy rainfall on September 25 and 26, while light to moderate rainfall is likely across Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, and Odisha during the next three days. This period will see more scattered rains over the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

Northwest India

In northwest India, light to moderate rainfall is forecast in most areas, except for East Uttar Pradesh, which is likely to receive heavy rainfall on September 28. Isolated heavy rainfall is also expected in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and parts of Uttar Pradesh between September 26 and 29.

As of September 24, 2024, the southwest monsoon has begun to withdraw from several regions, including parts of Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Punjab, marking the end of the monsoon season in these areas.

With heavy to very heavy rainfall forecasted in multiple regions, residents and authorities are advised to stay vigilant and prepare for possible disruptions.
