Weather Update (October 14): Heavy Rainfall Expected in Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, and Odisha as Monsoon Withdraws

India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an updated weather forecast, signaling significant rainfall in several regions and the gradual withdrawal of the Southwest Monsoon. On October 13, 2024, the IMD reported heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal, with heavy rainfall also expected over East Rajasthan, West Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Odisha.  

Southwest Monsoon Withdrawal & Northeast Monsoon Onset

The Southwest Monsoon has further withdrawn from Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Sikkim, and parts of Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Assam, and Meghalaya. The withdrawal line now runs through:

In the next two days, the monsoon is likely to retreat from Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and parts of Maharashtra, with complete withdrawal expected in the subsequent two days. Simultaneously, the onset of the Northeast Monsoon is anticipated, bringing easterly and northeasterly winds across southern India and parts of the Bay of Bengal.

Rainfall Forecast (October 13-18, 2024)

South India:

  • Heavy to Extremely Heavy Rainfall: Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal on October 16, Rayalaseema from October 15-17, Coastal Andhra Pradesh on October 15-16.

  • Scattered Rainfall: Kerala, Karnataka, and Lakshadweep will witness moderate rainfall throughout the week.

West & Central India:

  • Gujarat: Scattered light to moderate rainfall expected over the next two days.

  • Isolated Rainfall: West Madhya Pradesh, Konkan, Goa, and Maharashtra on October 13, with Konkan & Goa experiencing heavy showers on October 17.

North India:

  • East Rajasthan: Heavy rain on October 13.

Northeast & East India:

  • No significant rainfall is predicted during this period.
