"Wheat Reaches Its Vegetative Phase in MP, Punjab & Haryana," says MNCFC
Madhya Pradesh, some of Punjab, and parts of Haryana's wheat crops have reached the peak vegetative stage, according to the Mahalanobis National Crop Forecast Center (MNCFC).
In contrast, due to a delay in sowing, the wheat crop in eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar has not yet reached the most vegetative phase, according to the organization's most recent report.
A wheat plant's life cycle is divided into three major development phases. The vegetative phase, during which leaves and tillers develop, the reproductive phase, and the grain fill stage are the three main developmental stages that make up a wheat plant's life cycle.
Depending on the sowing date and genotype, the duration of the vegetative stage (GS1) in wheat can range from 60 to 150 days. It is determined by the rate of leaf appearance (phyllochron) and the timing of floral differentiation (double ridge), both of which are influenced by photoperiod and vernalization.
Any unusual temperature increase could have a negative impact on yields because the wheat crop typically reaches the grain fill stage in March.
The main rabi crop is wheat, and harvesting will start at the end of the following month. In the crop year 2022–2023, the government predicts record wheat production of 112.18 million tonnes (July-June).
In order to prevent a repeat of last year, when the output declined due to a heatwave, the government has established a committee to monitor the impact of temperature rise on the wheat crop.
In order to operationalize the use of space and related technology for better agricultural forecasting and drought assessment, MNCFC was established under the auspices of the agriculture ministry.
