Rabi 2026: Why Field Preparation Matters Amid Weather Uncertainties

Rabi 2026–27 will require a more localised and preparedness-driven approach to crop planning. The season’s performance will depend not just on monsoon rainfall, but also on residual soil moisture, Kharif harvesting timelines, water availability, and farmers’ ability to sow crops within the appropriate window.

In southern India, assured irrigation and reservoir levels will be important considerations, while parts of eastern India may face challenges arising from excess moisture and delayed field preparation. For crops such as wheat, mustard and chickpea, timely sowing, effective nutrient management and protection against weed competition will be critical to achieving better productivity.

The next 30–60 days will be particularly important for translating weather conditions into farm-level decisions. Farmers need access to timely, location-specific agronomic advice rather than relying solely on district-level rainfall trends.

We are focusing on strengthening field-level engagement and farmer education to support the appropriate selection, timing and application of crop-protection solutions. Wheat weed management will be an important area of focus, alongside awareness initiatives in crops such as maize and paddy.

As Indian agriculture navigates increasing weather variability, the priority must be to help farmers make informed decisions at the right time. Rabi preparedness is not about predicting every eventuality; it is about equipping farmers with the right knowledge and solutions to manage uncertainty and protect crop productivity.
