'Farmers Will Rule the World One Day,' Says Kerala's Spice Award 2024 Winner
Sopna Kallingal, through her integrated and organic farming approach, has fulfilled her husband's dreams with the success of Kallingal Plantation, becoming an inspiration for women and farmers alike.
Sopna Kallingal, a woman farmer from the Thrissur district of Kerala, recently won the prestigious Spice Award 2024, by the Indian Institute of Spices Research (IISR) at a ceremony in Kozhikode on June 2, 2024, this accolade celebrates her dedication to integrated crop management and enterprise diversification, particularly in spice-based cropping systems. Her story is a brilliant example of resilience, innovation, and the power of sustainable agriculture.
From Urban Roots to Rural Success
Born and raised in Bangalore, Sopna's journey into farming began in 1999 when she married Ciby Kallingal, a farmer and national awardee in agriculture. At the time, Sopna was a teacher and had worked as an academic counselor in a software company. After her marriage, she embraced her role as a homemaker and became familiar with the Kallingal plantation. Tragedy struck in 2019 when her husband passed away in an accident, leaving Sopna to fulfill his dream of taking the plantation to new heights.
A Diverse and Sustainable Plantation
Kallingal plantation spans 15 acres, where Sopna practices an integrated cropping system. The primary crop is nutmeg, complemented by coconut palms, areca nut, and black pepper vines. Her diverse farm also includes vegetables, cocoa, and plankton, along with livestock such as horses, cows, ducks, and more. Sopna also dedicates 10 acres to rubber cultivation and another 6 acres in Idukki district to cardamom, coffee, and nutmeg.
Her commitment to sustainability is evident in her organic farming methods. She produces her compost, utilizing farmyard manure and vermicomposting techniques, incorporating cow dung, horse dung, and hen dung. By practicing organic farming, Sopna not only enhances soil fertility but also promotes healthier crops.
Overcoming Challenges in Farming
Sopna faces several challenges in her farming journey, including climate change, fluctuating market prices, and wildlife threats. Nutmeg, for instance, sells at Rs. 220 per kg, while areca nut fetches less than Rs. 200 per kg. These prices do not adequately cover the high input costs of these crops.
"There is not a sufficient way to cope with climate and wildlife right now," Sopna admits. However, she emphasizes the importance of direct market linkages and organic farming for quality products. By producing organic compost and adopting sustainable practices, she improves the resilience and quality of her produce.
A Vision for Integrated Farming
Sopna's dedication to integrated farming stems from her belief in its potential to generate consistent income throughout the year. She highlights the benefits of drying and stocking farm products, allowing farmers to sell them during price hikes for better market value.
"Monoculture has many risks, but through integrated farming, you can manage to get income throughout the year," she asserts. Her farm exemplifies how diverse crops and livestock contribute to a sustainable and profitable agricultural model.
A Legacy of Empowerment and Education
Sopna's achievements extend beyond farming. She is actively involved in empowering other farmers, offering high-quality planting materials and sharing her knowledge of organic farming. As a member of a Farmer Producer Organization (FPO), the advisory board of her village panchayat, and the Kerala State Biodiversity Board, she plays a crucial role in promoting sustainable agricultural practices.
She has attended numerous training sessions on integrated farming, women empowerment, entrepreneurship, and plant propagation, further enhancing her expertise. Her dedication earned her the state award for the best woman farmer, recognizing her contributions to Kerala's agricultural landscape.
Inspiring the Future of Farming
Sopna's journey is a powerful reminder of the essential role farmers play in society. "Farmers will rule the world one day," she declares. "Without a farmer, society can’t work. He is the one who produces food on which everyone thrives." Sopna envisions a future where farmers receive the respect and recognition they deserve, living with the same status as doctors and engineers.
Her story inspires fellow farmers to continue their work proudly, knowing their efforts are vital to society's well-being. By sharing her knowledge and supporting other farmers, Sopna fosters a community of resilient and empowered agriculturists.
