B. Naidu, an innovative farmer

The journey of B. Naidu, a Krishi Ratna awardee farmer from Andhra Pradesh, is an inspiring example of how natural farming can transform not just agriculture but entire communities. His story is a testament to the power of nature, and how embracing sustainable practices can restore soil health, boost farmer incomes, and lead to healthier, more nourishing food. "Natural farming revived not just my soil, but my life. It brought health to my family, prosperity to my farm, and hope to my community," said B. Naidu.

B. Naidu had been managing the agricultural lands at the Art of Living International Center when his interest in natural farming began to bloom. His conversations with fellow ashramites often revolved around environmental sustainability and farming methods, sparking deeper curiosity. It was during these discussions that he crossed paths with Dr. Prabhakar Rao, Chairman of the Sri Sri Institute of Agricultural Sciences and Technology. This encounter became a pivotal moment in Naidu's life.

The Art of Living’s agricultural trust has trained over 22 million farmers in natural farming techniques, and Naidu became one of its beneficiaries. Inspired by the possibilities that natural farming offered, he took a leap of faith, transitioning from chemical-based farming to more eco-friendly, sustainable practices.

A Farm in Decline: Pre-Natural Farming Struggles

Like many farmers, Naidu was trapped in the cycle of conventional farming. For years, he relied on chemical fertilizers and pesticides, which promised higher yields but delivered only temporary gains. Over time, the health of his soil deteriorated, and crop productivity declined. Despite putting in hard work, Naidu’s profits stagnated at around Rs. 30,000—barely enough to cover his farming expenses and support his family.

In addition to his financial struggles, Naidu’s family began to experience health issues, which he believed were linked to the chemicals used in his farming practices. These challenges pushed him to reconsider his approach, leading him to embrace natural farming methods.

Embracing Nature: The Natural Farming Journey

Naidu’s transition to natural farming was not immediate. It required patience, learning, and faith in a process that rejected chemical inputs in favor of organic methods. With the guidance and support of the Art of Living Ashram, Naidu learned how to use organic fertilizers, natural pest management solutions, and regenerative agricultural techniques that focused on restoring the health of the soil.

Within just three years, the health of Naidu’s soil had been revitalized, and his crop yields soared. His income surged to Rs. 1,20,000, a fourfold increase from his previous earnings. His naturally grown crops, including rice and groundnuts, fetched up to 50% higher prices in the market compared to their chemically farmed counterparts. Consumers were willing to pay a premium for healthier, organically-grown food.

Naidu’s story illustrates a key lesson: not only can natural farming restore soil fertility and increase productivity, but it can also boost farmer incomes by tapping into the growing demand for organic produce.

Inspired by his success, Naidu made it his mission to help others benefit from natural farming. He became a community leader, sharing his knowledge with fellow farmers. Naidu provided free natural pesticides to over 165 farmers in his village, helping them transition to eco-friendly farming practices. His selfless efforts created a ripple effect, transforming the farming landscape of his community.

Naidu’s dedication extended beyond his village. His involvement with the Art of Living Ashram grew, where he applied organic fertilizers and natural pest management solutions on a larger scale, supporting sustainable agriculture for a broader community. His passion for promoting natural farming methods became a driving force in his life, motivating him to uplift not just his farm but those of others.

Naidu’s commitment to sustainable farming caught the attention of world-renowned environmental activist Dr. Vandana Shiva, a strong advocate of natural farming. At a 2017 summit held at the Art of Living International Center, Naidu shared the stage with Dr. Shiva, where they both emphasized the importance of sustainable farming practices. Dr. Shiva spoke passionately about how natural farming preserves ecosystems, reduces input costs for farmers, and aligns with the global push for sustainable agriculture.

For Naidu, this was a proud moment—a culmination of his journey from conventional farming to becoming a natural farming advocate. His success and dedication to sharing his knowledge made him a respected figure in the sustainable farming community.

A Beacon of Hope

B. Naidu’s story is a powerful reminder that the key to reversing the decline in soil health, boosting farmer incomes, and producing healthier food lies not in chemicals, but in returning to nature. His transformation from a struggling farmer to a Krishi Ratna awardee is a beacon of hope for farmers across the country.

By embracing natural farming, Naidu not only revived his soil but also revitalized his life, bringing health and prosperity to his family and his community. His journey underscores the potential for natural farming to reshape the future of agriculture, offering farmers a path to sustainable success.
