Shital Hawale’s Journey from Struggle to Earning Rs. 2.5 Lakh Through Natural Farming and Dairy
Shital Hawale, a progressive farmer, transformed his life by adopting natural farming through the Sri Sri Kisan Manch, boosting his income to Rs. 2.5 lakh from organic jaggery production on half an acre and creating a successful dairy business, while also raising A2 milk from indigenous cows.
Shital Hawale, from Alate Village in Kolhapur District, Maharashtra, exemplifies the transformative power of sustainable farming. Shital initially struggled with the harsh realities of conventional chemical farming—rising costs, poor yields, and deteriorating soil health. However, after a personal crisis and a profound encounter with the teachings of Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, Shital adopted organic farming practices, turning his life and farm around. Today, he inspires many farmers, proving that farming can be both profitable and environmentally sustainable with the right knowledge, community support, and a holistic approach.
Early Struggles with Chemical Farming
Shital’s farming journey began with a deep connection to the land and a commitment to his family’s farming tradition. He managed 3-4 acres using chemical farming methods. Despite his hard work, he struggled with rising input costs and saw his soil’s health and crop yields deteriorate. Over time, the cost of chemicals and declining productivity left him with minimal profits.
A Life-Changing Moment: Inspired by Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar
In 2014, Shital’s life took a turn when his sister was diagnosed with cancer. In searching for treatment options, Shital stumbled upon a video of Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar discussing the benefits of natural farming. This message resonated deeply with Shital, and he realized the connection between health and the health of the land. Inspired by Gurudev’s teachings, Shital decided to transition to sustainable farming practices, aiming to heal his land and create a healthier future for his family and community.
Shital became a part of the Sri Sri Kisan Manch, a cooperative founded by Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, designed to empower small farmers with natural farming techniques. Through this cooperative, Shital learned about Jeevamrut, an affordable organic fertilizer that costs just Rs. 1,000 per acre, compared to the Rs. 10,000 spent on chemical fertilizers. By adopting mixed cropping and other natural farming practices, Shital not only reduced his costs but also improved soil health, drought resistance, and overall crop yields.
Reaping the Benefits: Reduced Costs and Improved Crop Health
The Sri Sri Kisan Manch also helped Shital access better pricing on seeds and fertilizers. Through collective resource pooling, he gained direct access to markets, ensuring fairer returns on his produce. These changes were instrumental in rebuilding his farm's profitability, making it both financially and environmentally sustainable.
Alongside farming, the cooperative introduced holistic practices such as meditation and Youth Leadership Training from the Art of Living Foundation. These practices were as essential as the physical work on the farm. "These practices help us face challenges with calm and focus," says Shital, who credits his emotional resilience and mental clarity for helping him navigate the difficulties of farming.
Thriving with Indigenous Cow Breeds and A2 Milk
Shital’s shift to organic farming has yielded incredible results. Today, his farm thrives, and he has expanded his efforts by raising indigenous cow breeds like Gir and Sahiwal, known for producing A2 milk—a healthier, more nutritious alternative to regular milk. Shital now supports over 150 desi cows, supplying A2 milk to more than 350 customers. His success in dairy farming has become another pillar of his thriving business.
A Remarkable Transformation: Jaggery Production and Dairy Farming
Shital’s farm not only produces A2 milk but also generates a substantial income from organic jaggery production. Last year, he earned Rs. 2.5 lakh from producing 81 tonnes of jaggery on just half an acre. His commitment to chemical-free farming has also allowed him to launch a successful dairy business, which contributes significantly to his family’s income.
Shital’s story has inspired countless farmers to embrace natural farming practices. Through the Sri Sri Kisan Manch, Shital’s efforts have contributed to helping over 1,00,000 farmers across India adopt sustainable practices, improve their livelihoods, and protect the environment. Shital’s success proves that when farmers unite and adopt holistic farming practices, they can transform their own lives and the future of rural India.
A Vision for the Future: Guardians of the Land
Reflecting on his journey, Shital says, “I am not just a farmer. I am a guardian of the land, ensuring balance and prosperity for all.” His story is a beacon of hope for rural India, showing that farming can be profitable, sustainable, and fulfilling. With his continued efforts, Shital believes the future of agriculture in India will be brighter, healthier, and more sustainable for generations to come.
