This Agripreneur Distributes Over a Million Free Rubber Saplings to Empower Local Farmers
Meet Kathi Chishi, who empowers farmers through TOKA, a Dimapur-based society, offering training, microfinance, and nursery management to uplift communities.
Kathi Chishi is an agripreneur who belongs to Zunheboto district of Nagaland. He has been recognized as the Millionaire Horticulture Farmer of India by Krishi Jagran for his work with mangoes and pineapples, Kathi's journey is one of dedication, innovation, and community upliftment.
A Journey Rooted in Education and Experience
Kathi has completed his graduation from Delhi University and post-graduation from the Indian Institute of Mass Communication in Delhi. Belonging to the northeastern state, Kathi was always fascinated with agriculture. He mentions, “The Northeast, with its subtropical climate, abundant land, and potential for tea, coffee, and rubber plantations, offers immense opportunities.” His professional journey towards agriculture started with the Consortium of Indian Farmers Association (CIFA), where he worked there for two years, until 2007. It was during this time that he gained valuable insights into agriculture through research and development, equipping him with the knowledge needed to make a difference.
In 2009, Kathi returned to his roots in Nagaland and with his interest in agriculture and willingness to help the farmers of his area, he joined his family venture, TOKA MPCS (Multi-Purpose Cooperative Society). With his efforts, he took TOKA to another level, focusing on plantations and nurseries, and becoming a major supplier of rubber in the Northeastern states.
Empowering Farmers with Knowledge and Resources
Under Kathi's leadership, TOKA MPCS got contracted under the Rubber Board to provide free rubber saplings to farmers. Last year alone, they distributed over a million saplings, demonstrating their commitment to empowering local farmers. The joy of distributing these saplings is palpable in Kathi's voice: "We are proud to be a part of this growth. Our mission is to empower farmers with the resources and skills they need to succeed." By offering these saplings at no cost, Kathi is not just helping farmers plant trees; he is sowing seeds of change and hope, creating a future where prosperity and sustainability go hand in hand.
Standing in the fields, watching farmers nurture these young saplings, Kathi sees more than just plants growing. He sees dreams taking root and communities flourishing. "Each sapling is a step towards a brighter future," he shares with heartfelt conviction. The smiles on the farmers' faces as they receive these saplings are the real rewards for Kathi and his team.
Kathi's expertise in rubber plantations spans nearly three decades. His company cultivates not only rubber but also Alphonso mangoes, pineapples, lemons, and areca nuts. They have over 200 acres of nursery space, where innovative techniques such as grafting, budding, and the use of green sheets and plastic rollers for pineapples are employed. Micronutrients, sprinklers, spray guns, tractors, and power tillers are integral to their operations, ensuring efficient and sustainable practices.
A Vision for the Future
With an impressive annual turnover of 15 crores, Kathi remains committed to sharing his knowledge and encouraging others to pursue agriculture. "Exchange ideas," he advises fellow farmers. "Agriculture is a diverse field, and young people should consider it."
Kathi's success has not gone unnoticed. In 2019, he received the National Entrepreneurship Award from the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship and was recognized as the best mentor. "Winning these awards is an honor, but the real reward is seeing our community thrive," Kathi reflects.
Kathi Chishi's story is a testament to the power of vision, hard work, and community spirit. His journey from a student in Delhi to a horticulture leader in Nagaland inspires others to explore the possibilities within agriculture and make a lasting impact. As he looks to the future, Kathi is not only nurturing plants but also cultivating a legacy of hope, resilience, and growth for generations to come.
