Jharkhand is replacing Centre’s Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana with its own crop relief scheme for farmers of the state. Jharkhand’s crop insurance scheme will be launched tomorrow, 29th December 2020 but it will take three months to come into effect.

About Jharkhand Fasal Rahat Yojana

Fasal Rahat Yojana is a compensation scheme that aims to provide security cover to the farmers for crop damage due to natural calamity. The scheme will cover land owning as well as landless farmers in Jharkhand. The Department of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry & Co-operative will be the implementing authority and it will work together with a project management unit, which will be a consultancy firm to take care of technical requirements.

The objective of the scheme is food safety, crop diversification, rapid development in agriculture & paving the way for competition.

Why Jharkhand government is replacing PMFBY?

As we know that every year a big amount is paid to the insurance companies as premium. Jharkhand has paid Rs 512.55 crore in the past three years while the compensation claim settlement was just Rs 82.86 crore that was only 16% of the total premium.

In addition, the number of farmers benefited as compared to the actual cover is also vastly unequal. In the past three years, out of 33.79 lakh registered farmers, only 2.25 lakh got benefit from the scheme. The state government said since it gives half the insurance premium, it will rather use that amount for direct compensation.
