According to an official, Mizoram has exported pineapples grown in the state for the first time to Dubai. Tawnluia, Deputy Chief Minister, flagged off a consignment of 230 kg of pineapples grown by farmers in Sialhawk village, Khawzawl district, to Dubai on Friday.

Tawnluia, who is also the local MLA, stated that plans are being made to export Sialhawk pineapples to Qatar's capital Doha and Bahrain.

He stated that the state government would take steps to build link roads to all pineapple farms in his constituency, as well as make efforts to find markets for the farmers if they harvested more.

F Lalnunmawia, vice chairman of the State Horticulture Development Board and a legislator from the ruling Mizo National Front, hailed the development as a watershed moment in Mizoram's history.

The pineapples were purchased in Mumbai by Fair Exports (I) Private Limited, a division of Lulu Group International, and will be shipped to Dubai, according to Horticulture Department Secretary K Lalthawmmawia.

He added that another 900 kg of pineapples from Sialhawk would be shipped to Dubai soon, as well as 740 kg to Qatar and Bahrain.

He added that farmers must maintain quality and value-added pineapples in order to remain competitive in the global market.
