Rs. 7 Crore Rain Relief Funds to be credited in Pondicherry Farmers’ Accounts

Pondicherry farmers affected by the recent rainfall will get Rs. 7.10 crore rain relief for 2021-2022, announced Agriculture Minister C ‘Theni’ Jayakumar in a statement. This was announced around the same time as the Centre approved an additional Rs. 6 crores to the Union Territory as rain relief as well

Lt Governor Dr. Tamilisai Soundararajan approved relief assistance to the affected farmers in Pondicherry Karaikal and Yanam regions on Wednesday. The relief will be provided at Rs. 20,000 per hectare.

Approximately, 2985.56 hectares of vegetables, paddy, and tuber crops were afflicted due to the heavy rainfall in Pondicherry. Around 487.79 hectares in Karaikal and 79.53 hectares in Yana were badly hit by the heavy rainfall as well.

In Pondicherry, around 6054 farmers including 5749 small and marginal farmers (SMF) and 305 other farmers (OSMF) will be provided Rs. 59711200.

In Karaikal, 731 farmers including 652 SMF and 79 OSMF will get Rs. 9755800. In Yanam, 231 farmers, 222 SMF, and nine OMF will receive Rs. 1590600. The relief money will be directly credited to the farmers’ bank accounts. 

Additional Directors of Agriculture (T&V), Thattanchavady, Pondicherry, and Karaikal, and Deputy Director of Agriculture, Yanam will make sure all the farmers receive the ex gratia.
