On February 22, the Sikkim government will open the much-anticipated modern technology of hydroponics, aquaponics, and rooftop farming at Sokeythang, Gangtok.

The Minister of Agriculture, Horticulture, and Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, Lok Nath Sharma, announced this at a press conference held at the Training Hall of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services.

Sharma spoke about the goals and purpose of launching the newly developed agricultural technologies of aquaponics, hydroponics, and rooftop farming during the occasion. He stated that modern technology will increase production even within small private farmlands, resulting in financial advantages for farmers.

Modern Agriculture Technologies: A Primary emphasis

"Hydroponics is a method of growing plants without the need for soil and organic fertilizers. Farmers would benefit greatly from it since it ensures larger yields and economic returns than natural agricultural practices due to the increased number of harvest cycles. Aquaponics is a soilless plant cultivation technique that combines the rearing of fish in tanks with the production of food. The nutrient-rich water created during the fish-raising method serves as a natural fertilizer for plants, which in turn helps to purify water for the fish”, the Minister said.

Sharma stated that concerned departments have developed four separate hydroponics, aquaponics, and rooftop farming models for both cheap and high-cost greenhouses at selected locations.

Much-anticipated benefits for Interested Individuals

After the scheduled launch of Hydroponics, Aquaponics, and Rooftop farming, according to the IPR report, these models will stay accessible for interested individuals to explore, obtain help from technical specialists, and educate visitors about the technique, advantages, and structural set-up.

In addition, the department will provide critical technical assistance and direction. He said, "An absolute procedure will be devised to assure speedy response to people's inquiries and concerns."

Sharma detailed various advantages of modern farming technology, including optimal area use, higher growth rates, double harvesting ratio, a strong return on investment, and a time-saving method, among others.

He went on to say that the banking industry has been convinced to support entrepreneurs who want to operate in this field.

The Minister also spoke on his recent visits to the CSIR/IHBT in Himachal Pradesh and Hyderabad, emphasizing the vast array of opportunities for enhancing productivity and earning income through hydroponics and aquaponics.
