How to Grow Muskmelon:
Land/ Pot preparation:
-
If you are growing muskmelon in the garden, plow the land and bring to a fine tilth. Instead of the conventional method, it is better to grow muskmelon in raised beds as the system improves soil drainage. Beds must be worked 16 to 20 cm deep to promote deep rooting.
-
And to grow in the pot, fill the pot with potting mix and add fertilizer and mix thoroughly. Sow the seeds one-inch-deep and with equal spacing. Regular watering is must as the crop can’t tolerate dry soil.
Climatic Requirement:
Being a summer crop, muskmelon can be grown at a slightly warm temperature. The seed germinates best at the temperature of 20 to 30-degree C, so can be sown in the month of November to February. And grows well in temperatures ranging from 25 to 35-degree C.
Fertilizer Requirement:
-
Add composted manure to the soil during bed preparation. And for balanced nutrients, add organic fertilizer to the soil.
-
To make fruits and flower sweeter, mix 4-5 tablespoons of Epsom salt, and 1-2 tablespoons of household borax in 5 liters of water, and spray this solution on ripe vines.
Pest Management without Chemicals:
-
Soap solutions are an all-purpose way to get rid of aphids and beetles. Homemade neemastra can be used to protect melons from other pests.
-
The average yield of 100 to 150 quintal/ha can be expected.
Harvesting:
Muskmelons usually separate naturally from the stem when become ripe, so they come away from the vine with just a gentle pull. Store harvested melons in a clean and cool place.
