The Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), popularly known as Pusa Institute, is India’s national institute for agriculture research, education, and extension. The institute was initially located in Pusa, Bihar, as the Imperial Institute of Agricultural Research in 1911.
It was then renamed the Imperial Agriculture Research Institute in 1919, and following a significant earthquake in Pusa, it was relocated to Delhi in 1936. The current institute in Delhi is financed and administered by the ICAR or Indian Council of Agricultural Research.The IARI was responsible for the research leading to the Green Revolution in India in 1970.
IARI serves the nations by providing “Science-led sustainable and globally competitive agriculture for food, nutrition and livelihood security in India.”

IARI Admission Process
1. Admission for M.Sc./M.Tech
The ICAR education division undertakes an entrance examination for admission to M.Sc./MTech degree courses at IARI. Based on merit, ICAR finalizes the list for M.Sc./MTech degree courses in 26 disciplines at IARI.
2. Admission for Ph.D
Admission to the Ph.D. courses in 26 disciplines shall be made based on performance in written exam (80% weightage) + academic score (10% weightage) + Interview (10% weightage).

Facilities at IARI:
- Library Services: IARI Library is one of the largest and the finest agrobiological libraries in South East Asia, housing a total of 6 lakh publications, including 1 lakh books/monographs, 15000 postgraduate thesis, 3,50,000 journal volumes, 45000 bulletins, 30000 recent clippings, 10000 pamphlets, 30000 reports, and other reference materials.
- Sports Activity:The Institute motivates extracurricular activities that enrich the cultural, physical, and social life of students. Spacious playgrounds are there for outdoor games like cricket, football, Volleyball, Tennis, Badminton, and various athletic events. There are indoor games facilities are Chess, carrom and table tennis.
- Hostels: Institute has five hostels for Boys, one for Girls, and one apartment for married students.
- Phytotron Facility: The Institute established a national Phytotron Facility in 1997. IARI is the first facility in the country to study the live responses of plants under controlled conditions and the possible impact of climate changes and greenhouse gases.
- Auditorium Facility: There are 10 Auditoriums in the Institute. There is an auditorium in the name of the ex-director of the Institute Dr. B.P Pal. It has a seating capacity of 350people.
