Dairy Farming: NCW Launches Training Programme for Rural Women

The National Commission for Women has launched a nationwide training and capacity building programme for women in dairy farming in order to empower them and make them financially independent.

The commission is collaborating with agricultural institutions across India to identify and teach women involved in dairy farming and related activities in different areas such as value addition, quality development, dairy product packaging, and marketing, among others.

The project's first programme for women SHG groups was conducted at the Lala Lajpat Rai University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences in Hisar, Haryana, in collaboration with the Haryana State Rural Livelihood Mission.

NCW chairperson Rekha Sharma stated at the project's launch that financial independence is critical to women's empowerment. Through the project, NCW strives to empower women and assist them in achieving financial independence by training them in dairy product quality enhancement, value addition, packaging, increasing shelf life, and marketing their goods.

The commission will give training to women in order to help them improve their businesses and encourage them to become entrepreneurs.

NCW will also choose trainers to teach women entrepreneurs, milk cooperative societies operated by women, women self-help groups, and so on.

NCW intends to develop a sustainable and replicable district level model in the dairy sector that can be adopted across the country's dairy farming regions.

 Ms Sharma said, this would empower rural women and provide them with financial independence. According to her, the National Commission for Women has been trying to assist women in reaching their full potential.

The National Commission for Women (NCW) is a statutory body of the Government of India concerned with advising the government on all women's policy matters. It was formed on January 31, 1992, in accordance with the provisions of the Indian Constitution as stated in the National Commission for Women Act of 1990.

Jayanti Patnaik was the commission's first chairperson. Rekha Sharma is the chairwoman as of November 30, 2018.
