A decade ago, encountering a peacock was considered a fortunate and rare occurrence, but now it has become a common sight. A report says that the population of peafowls in the state has surged by 150 percent since 1998.

A collaborative study involving 13 organizations, including the Wildlife Institute and the World Wildlife Fund, uncovered a significant finding about peacocks. The study relied on data gathered by 30,000 bird enthusiasts using the e-bird system. In the past, peacocks were limited to specific regions like Idukki, Wayanad, Palakkad, and Thrissur districts, but they are now distributed throughout the state.

Peacocks are traditionally found in dry, rocky, and bushy areas. Dr. P.O. Namir from the Kerala Agricultural University Wildlife Department suggests that the growing peacock population may be a natural response to Kerala's changing climate. The designation of peacocks as the national bird in 1963, along with strengthened efforts in forest and wildlife conservation, has contributed to their population increase.

According to research, 19 per cent of Kerala's land area now provides favourable habitat for peacocks, and this is projected to increase to 40 per cent by 2050. The proliferation of peacocks poses a threat to agricultural crops. Abundant food sources like rice and vegetables, coupled with dry conditions, contribute to their population growth. Additionally, the presence of wild boars, for which there are no provisions for control, poses another threat to the state. While peacocks themselves don't cause drought, their crop destruction is already proving to be a significant challenge for farmers, creating a new crisis in the agricultural sector.

How to Start a Peacock Farm — Full Guidelines

Starting a peacock farm can be a unique and rewarding venture, but it requires careful planning and preparation due to the specific needs of these exotic birds. Here's a comprehensive guide to help you get started:

Research and Planning:

  • Learn About Peacocks: Understand the different species of peacocks, their behavior, habitat, diet, and care requirements. Indian and Green Peafowls are the most common varieties kept in captivity.

  • Legal Requirements: Check with local authorities and agricultural departments for any permits or licenses required to own and raise peacocks.

  • Location: Choose a suitable location for your farm, considering factors like climate, available space, and proximity to resources.

Housing and Infrastructure:

  • Peacock Enclosure: Build a spacious and secure enclosure to protect peacocks from predators and the elements. A covered area is essential for shelter.

  • Fencing: Install tall and strong fencing (6-8 feet high) with an overhang to prevent peacocks from flying away.

  • Nesting Boxes: Provide nesting boxes for peahens if you plan to breed them.

Diet and Nutrition:

  • Feeding: Peacocks are omnivorous and require a varied diet. Offer a mix of grains, seeds, fruits, vegetables, and insects. Commercial peafowl feed can also be part of their diet.

  • Fresh Water: Ensure a constant supply of clean and fresh water.

Health Care:

  • Regular Checkups: Schedule regular visits from a veterinarian experienced with avian care to monitor the health of your peafowls.

  • Vaccination: Follow recommended vaccination schedules to prevent diseases.

  • Parasite Control: Implement a parasite control program to keep your peafowls healthy.

Breeding:

  • Breeding Pairs: Choose healthy breeding pairs to produce offspring.

  • Nesting Area: Provide secure and secluded nesting areas for peahens.

  • Incubation: If you want to hatch eggs artificially, invest in an incubator.

Record Keeping:

  • Maintain Records: Keep detailed records of your peafowls' health, breeding history, and other important information.

Marketing and Sales:

  • Market Research: Identify potential customers, such as collectors, pet owners, and zoos.

  • Advertising: Create a website, use social media, or attend local agricultural fairs to market your peacocks.

Legal Compliance:

  • Zoning Regulations: Ensure that your farm complies with local zoning regulations and restrictions.

  • Import and Export: If you plan to trade peacocks internationally, be aware of import/export regulations and obtain necessary permits.

Financial Planning:

  • Budget: Create a comprehensive budget for all expenses, including housing, feeding, healthcare, and marketing.

  • Income Projections: Estimate your potential income from peacock sales and other related activities.

Education and Networking:

  • Join local or online peafowl associations and networks to learn from experienced peafowl breeders and stay updated on industry trends.

Starting a peacock farm can be a fascinating and fulfilling endeavor, but it requires commitment, research, and the right infrastructure. Ensure that you provide the best care for your peafowls to thrive and potentially generate income through sales and other related activities.
