Forests can be an extremely scary place as is, with their large, dark shadows and unidentifiable animal sounds. However, did you know that there are some forests around the world that are actually haunted? Let us check them out.

1.Wistman’s Wood- Wistman’s Wood is part of the Dartmoor National Park in England. Along with the moss and lichen drip grounds, its tangled oak treetops completely block the sunlight creating an eerie atmosphere. There are some rumours that suggest that this forest is home to ghosts, druids, and a host of supernatural creatures.

Appalachain

2. The Appalachian Trail- Hikers claim that the Appalachian Trail in the United States of America is haunted. The legend goes that the ghost of a young boy that went missing in the late 19th century haunts the forest grounds as he looks for a way back home. Over the years many people have reported seeing an eerie, unseen presence at the mountaintop.

Broceliande

3. The Forest of Broceliande, France- Located in Brittany, France, the Forest of Broceliande is considered by many as the forest of the King Arthur legend and the home of Merlin’s tomb. It is also known as the forest in which the sorceress Morgan le Far imprisoned young unfaithful men. All of these legends together contribute to its spooky vibe.

Aokigahara

4. Aokigahara- Aokigahara in Japan is a deep forest at the base of Mount Fuji. It is also known as the Sea of Trees and is considered one of the eeriest places in the world. It is believed that the forest has large iron deposits which interfere with traveller’s compasses and set walkers on the wrong path. Since the 1950s, at least 500 suicides have been reported in the forest. Residents that live close to the forest claim to hear the voices of the tormented spirits throughout the night.

The Island of Dolls

5. The Island of Dolls- Isla de las Munecas or the Island of the Dolls is a forest situated along the canals of Xochimico in Mexico. This forest is covered in dolls that hang from the tree. Many believe that the dolls were kept by visitors to honor the soul of a little girl that drowned on the island. Today, the island is a popular tourist destination with many travelers claiming that they have noticed the dolls move their eyes, limbs, and heads.

The Hoia-Baciu Forest

6. The Hoia-Baciu Forest- The Hoia-Baciu forest in Romania is considered the Bermuda Triangle of Romania because of strange occurrences. For instance, it was reported that a shepherd and his flock of 200 sheep completely vanished inside the forest. A young girl went missing in the forest for five years only to reappear without having aged. Visitors to the forest report feeling anxious and like they are constantly being watched.

The Smolensk Forest

7. The Smolensk Forest- The Smolensk Forest in Russia was invaded by German troops during the height of 1943 only to discover the mass graves of approximately 20,000 Polish soldiers who were massacred on the orders of Joseph Stalin. In 2010, a plane full of Polish political, military, and business leaders crashed through the forest as well.

Wychwood Forest

8. Wychwood Forest- Wychwood forest, England is considered a haunted site by many visitors who have stepped inside the former hunting ground. Many have reported seeing apparitions of crying children and even being touched by an invisible being. Legend has it that Amy Robsart, the wife of the Earl of Leicester, mysteriously broke her neck and died. Her husband came across her ghost 10 days later only to be warned that he will be dead within 10 days as well. He did die 10 days later.

The Black Forest

9. The Black Forest- The Black Forest in Germany is known for its tall evergreen trees and for being home to a range of supernatural creatures like demons, witches, and werewolves.
