ISMA Raises its Sugar Export Forecast to 7.5 million tonnes

According to industry group ISMA, India's sugar exports are expected to jump 15.38 percent year on year to 7.5 million tonnes (mt) in the current marketing year 2021-22, owing to a potential increase in demand for the Indian sweetener amid the prospect of a worldwide shortfall.

According to the report, the government has physically shipped 4.2 million tonnes of sugar so far this marketing year, against export obligations for a total of six million tonnes. From October to September is the sugar marketing season. After Brazil, India is the world's second-largest sugar producer.

"India will export 7.5 million tonnes of sugar in the current season, up from six million tonne predicted earlier," according to the Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA).

Higher sugar exports from India are possible, according to the International Sugar Organization (ISO), which reported a global shortfall of roughly 1.93 million tonnes for the marketing year 2021-22 (October-September) and exporters' desire to buy more Indian sugar.

In March, Indian exporters are expected to ship another 1.2-1.3 million tonnes, bringing total physical shipments to 5.4-5.5 million tonnes, according to the report.

ISMA released the most recent sugar production numbers, stating that overall output reached 25.28 million tonnes during the October-February period of the current 2021-22 marketing year, rising 7.68 percent from 23.48 million tonne the previous year.

Uttar Pradesh, the country's biggest sugar-producing state, produced 6.86 million tonnes of sugar during the October-February marketing year, down from 7.42 million tonnes the previous year.

However, sugar production in Maharashtra, the country's second-largest producer, increased to 9.71 mt from 8.48 mt during the same period, while sugar production in Karnataka, the country's third-largest producer, increased to 5.08 mt from 4.08 mt.

During the current marketing year, Gujarat produced 7,93,000 tonnes of sugar and Tamil Nadu produced 4,53,000 tonnes. In the same time span, the remaining states produced 2.37 million tonnes, according to ISMA.
