Red Rice vs White Rice: Why White Rice is not Recommended in Your Menu?

Rice is an important food of Keralites.  There are two main types of rice used to make rice, white rice and red rice.  The average Keralite likes to eat white one.  But have you ever wondered which is better for health? May be your answer is negative.  The husked rice is used to make white rice.  It contains only significant starch.  If it is red rice, it means that the bran is not peeled.  In terms of quality, red rice is many times better than white rice.  Red rice is high in vitamins and water soluble fiber.

The most beneficial part of rice is its bran.  Rice is a grain that contains B complex components required for the functioning of the body.  Rice is also rich in thiamine, riboflavin and niacin.  The fiber in red rice can help control blood sugar and fat levels.  Red rice is a food with low glycemic index.  The glycemic index is the difference between consuming the same amount of glucose and any other food .So brown rice is better than white rice for diabetics.

The fiber in red rice not only regulates blood sugar and fat levels but also prevents constipation and provides proper motion.  Studies show that they help prevent cancer by stopping the growth of free radicals in our body.

The habit of washing the rice several times before cooking should be avoided.  This is because it loses its nutrients with each wash. It is estimated that more than 60% of the nutrients are lost after repeated washing.  If the rice is boiled in more water and the porridge is drained, the nutritional value is almost completely lost.  If you take one cup of rice, it is enough to use 2 cups of water.  Then there is no need to worry about losing nutrients.

It is said that diabetics can eat a lot of rice if they wash the rice with boiling water more than once.  This is not true.  So it is better to make the porridge dry instead of draining the water.  In doing so, the nutrients are not lost.

Beriberi is a common disease of people who eat white rice .  There are two types of beriberi.  The first is poor heart health with breathing disorder.  This is called wet beriberi.  The second is a condition in which the legs feel numb and swollen due to damage to the nerves.  It is also known as dry beriberi.  Red rice is recommended to avoid both of these conditions.
