What is Triphala & What Is It Made Of?

Triphala

Triphala is an Ayurvedic polyherbal formula. It is widely known for its remedial and medicinal qualities. Triphala is consumed in many forms which include powder, juice, dried, extract, tablet, etc. Triphala is a concoction of three medicinal fruits- Indian gooseberry, black myrobalan, and belleric myrobalan.

Triphala is considered beneficial in maintaining your overall health. It acts as a health promoter aiding different kinds of health issues. Equal portions of all three fruits are used as a mixture. Triphala is also considered good for skin and in maintaining hair quality. This mixture is said to have synergistic properties. Let us learn some more about the fruits which Triphala consists of.

Indian Gooseberry

Indian Gooseberry is also known as Amla. It has always played an important role in Ayurvedic medicine. Amla is said to be the oldest edible fruit in India. Amla is a small and round berry with pale 6-7 yellow striations that are present on the skin. They are sour and bitter. Amla and its extracts are used for their medicinal properties. They help in the prevention of cancer. Due to them being rich in fiber, they also aid constipation.

Black Myrobalan

Black Myrobalan or Harada, also called Terminalia Chebula is a species native to South-west and Southeast Asian countries, such as India, China, Srilanka, etc. It is one of the most popular ancient herbs which is used to improve memory. It is also called “King of medicines”. Black Myrobalan is known for its anti-oxidant properties. It contains antioxidants like quercetin and ascorbic acid( Vitamin C)  which are effective against oxidative damages caused by the concentration of free radicals in the body. It is also said that the consumption of Black Myrobalan can help in protecting nervous tissues in the brain. Phytochemicals present in the Black Myrobalan are responsible for the pharmacological properties that it possesses.

Belleric Myrobalan

Belleric Myrobalan is also known as Terminalia bellerica. It is also called Baheda. Belleric Myrobalan is being used in Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years. It was traditionally used as a paste mixed with buttermilk. It aids gastrointestinal problems and promotes bowel health.

Belleric Myrobalan is also used for maintaining the health of the respiratory system and is also good for the eyes and vision. It is also used as a medicine for colds and coughs.
