Whenever it comes to good eating habits, we frequently discuss eating wholesome fruits and veggies, and professionals often advise against drinking juices. However, according to a new study, drinking beetroot juice promotes a combination of oral bacteria linked to better blood vessels and cognitive function.

About The Study

Beetroot and similar other foods like lettuce, spinach, and celery are high in inorganic nitrate, according to a study published in the journal 'Redox Biology,' and many oral bacteria play a role in converting nitrate to nitric oxide, which helps to regulate blood vessels and neurotransmission. According to the research, older adults produce less nitric oxide, which is linked to worse vascular i.e. blood vessels and cognitive i.e. brain health.

In the new study from the University of Exeter.26 healthy older individuals took part in two ten-day supplementation periods, one with nitrate-rich beetroot juice and the other with nitrate-free placebo juice, which they drank twice a day,

The Findings

Inorganic nitrate is abundant in beetroot and other similar foods such as lettuce, spinach, and celery, and numerous oral bacteria help convert nitrate to nitric oxide, which helps in controlling blood vessels and neurotransmission i.e. chemical messages in the brain.

What Are The Opinions Of Experts?

Professor Anni Vanhatalo of the University of Exeter, main author, stated, "We are extremely pleased about these findings, which have major implications for healthy ageing.""Other studies have examined the oral bacteria of young and older individuals, and healthy people against diseased people, but ours is the first to evaluate a nitrate-rich diet in this way," Vanhatalo noted. "Our findings show that simply adding nitrate-rich foods to the diet - in this case, beetroot juice - for ten days can significantly modify the oral microbiome (mix of bacteria) for the better," Vanhatalo added.

Long-term maintenance of a healthy oral microbiome may help to delay the detrimental vascular and cognitive changes that come with ageing.
