Yogurt and Curd: Basic Difference & Which Is Better For Health

Curd and yogurt are two dairy products that usually create confusion in our minds. But are they common dairy products? In this article, we are going to discuss the basic difference and health benefits of curd and yogurt. 

In India, many of us think that yogurt is the western name of curd. But this is not so. Curd and yogurt are two different dairy products.  

What is the method of preparing Yogurt and curd? 

The method of preparation is the first major difference between curd and yogurt. Curd can be prepared by curdling leftover curd. 

Yogurt or yoghurt is a food that is produced by the bacterial fermentation of milk. The bacteria used to make yogurt are called yogurt cultures.

The major difference between yogurt and curd: 

  • Curd is a natural product that differs from home to home due to the lack of a consistent number of live bacteria; hence, curd cannot be regarded as a probiotic.

  • Curd includes Lactobacillus bacterium (lactic acid bacteria), whereas yogurt contains live Lactobacillus Bulgarisand Streptococcus thermophilus bacteria strains. 

  • Yogurt is a fermented product that is used for commercial purposes.

Which is more beneficial: Curd or Yogurt 

Both curd and yogurt are high in nutrients. Curd has a cooling effect on the body in general. It reduces the impact of spices, which are commonly used in Indian cuisine.  

Yogurt, on the other hand, is a high-protein food. There are a few forms of yogurt that have double the protein content of curd.  

Curd and yogurt are both high in vitamins and minerals that the body needs. These compounds help to avoid disorders like arthritis and osteoporosis in the elderly. 

The curd is rich in phosphorous and calcium. That is why it is beneficial for your bones and teeth. While yogurt is quite a good source of proteins. 

Flavored Yogurt: 

It depends on the flavor of the flavored yogurt. If it's a store-bought variety, there's a good chance it'll be rich in sugar and preservatives. It is, however, good to flavor yogurt at home with honey, bananas, or chocolate powder. Still, it is recommended to avoid flavored yogurt.
