To double the income of farmers in the next five years, the UP government announced 90% subsidy to small and marginal farmers on purchase and installation of sprinklers to improve irrigation.

Announcing the scheme in Vidhan Parishad, agriculture minister Surya Pratap Shahi said that in the first phase, 14,300 sprinklers would be distributed among small and marginal farmers, mainly in Bundelkhand.

Shahi said the scheme envisages 'one drop more crop' for the conservation of water in parched areas where groundwater table had plunged alarmingly. The agriculture minister also informed the House about the construction of more than 3,300 pounds in districts which get affected by drought.

Shahi claimed the state government had set up soil testing laboratories in all 75 districts.

SP state president and MLC Naresh Uttam said the government should compensate farmers whose crops are damaged by stray animals. Shahi said the government was in the process of setting up sheds for stray animals.
