Cage Farming: Dr. Abhilaksh Likhi Reviews Booming Aquaculture at Getalsud Dam, Ranchi

Dr. Abhilaksh Likhi, Secretary of the Department of Fisheries recently paid a visit to Getalsud Dam in Ranchi, Jharkhand, to assess the progress of cage farming initiatives. This collaborative effort between the Department of Fisheries and the Jharkhand government has transformed Getalsud Reservoir into a bustling center for cage culture, particularly focusing on Pangasius and Tilapia fish species.

Getalsud Reservoir is situated in Ranchi, Jharkhand and has emerged as a thriving hub for cage culture, with fish farmers from sixteen surrounding villages actively participating in cooperative societies dedicated to fisheries. These farmers utilize GI pipes or modular cages for their operations, achieving an impressive average production of 3-4 tons per cage annually. This translates to an overall profit exceeding Rs. 4 lakhs per annum, showcasing the economic viability of reservoir cage culture.

Cage Farming: Government Support & Initiatives

The inception of cage culture dates back to 2012-13, with significant government support under initiatives such as the Blue Revolution, RKVY, and PMMSY. Through these programs, 365 cages have been installed, fostering the cultivation of Tilapia, Pangasius, and crucial reservoir stocking activities. Notably, an impressive 25 lakh fingerlings are stocked annually to bolster fish population levels.

One of the key achievements of cage farming in Getalsud Dam is the establishment of robust market linkages. Locally produced fish, sold by fishermen at an average price of Rs. 120.00/kg, finds ready buyers in nearby markets. This not only ensures a steady income for the fishermen but also contributes significantly to the economic prosperity of the region.

Dr. Abhilaksh Likhi, during his visit, emphasized the vast potential of India's reservoir resources, estimated at 32 lakh hectares, which are currently underutilized for fish production. Recognizing the significance of harnessing these resources, initiatives like cage farming in Getalsud Dam serve as a beacon for sustainable utilization and economic empowerment.

Government Funding and Future Prospects

Under the CSS on Blue Revolution and the PMMSY, substantial government funding has been allocated to support cage farming initiatives. A total of 14,022 cages have been approved under various schemes, with a total project cost of Rs. 420 crores. Additionally, 44,908 units of cages have been approved under the PMMSY, with a project cost of Rs. 1292.53 crore. This underscores the government's commitment to fostering growth and innovation in the fisheries sector.

The visit by Secretary Dr. Abhilaksh Likhi to Getalsud Dam highlights the success of cage farming initiatives in Ranchi, Jharkhand. With significant government support, collaborative efforts, and a focus on sustainable practices, cage culture has not only transformed the local fisheries landscape but also emerged as a model for harnessing untapped reservoir resources across India.
