Cattles in Kerala to get Aadhar Card like Identification in the Form of a Microchip

A little gadget in the form of a microchip will assist the Animal Husbandry Department in gathering information about the cattle. The RFID (Radio Frequency Identification chip) will aid in the identification of each livestock (cow, buffalo, and goat) in the same way as Aadhaar card does. Additional information, such as the owner's name, vaccinations, and insurance, can be stored in the chip. Innovations and tips for Livestock management can have an major impact in dairy farming. The chip might be useful for disaster management and detecting scams. It can aid in the detection of traits such as high milk output and heat tolerance, as well as the conservation of high milk producing cattle breeds.

The project, which is part of the Animal Identification Traceability Project, will allow the department to collect information such as diseases and milk quality. The e-Health Management System will assist veterinarians in obtaining a general assessment.

At present the cattle are given the foot-and-mouth disease vaccination, they are given a plastic earring that looks like hanging carrying information.

Using a sterile disposable syringe, the RFID tags are inserted beneath the skin of the animal's left ear. Although the plastic earrings may be cut and removed, the assistance of a veterinary doctor is required to remove the chip. With the new system in place, 25 lakh additional farmers would be included in the initiative.

Saji Gopinath, Vice-Chancellor of the Kerala University of Digital Sciences, Kaushik, Director of the Department of Animal Husbandry, Innovation and Technology, signed as MoU in the presence of minister J Chinchu Rani.

For Rs 7.28 crore, the pilot project would be implemented for 75,000 cattle in the Pathanamthitta district.
