Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) conducted surprise inspections across Rajasthan and Delhi on September 3, 2024, in a decisive move to uphold educational standards. These inspections targeted 27 CBSE-affiliated schools to ensure adherence to the board’s standards, particularly regarding student attendance and compliance with Affiliation and Examination Bye-Laws. These surprise checks aimed to identify and address any issues around “dummy” or non-attending students, a practice CBSE considers a threat to educational integrity.

During the inspections, the CBSE inspection teams scrutinized attendance records, interacted with staff, and gathered videographic evidence to verify compliance. Their findings revealed alarming irregularities in several schools, indicating that students from grades IX to XII were registered as enrolled yet showed negligible or no attendance. In response to these findings, CBSE issued Show Cause Notices to the concerned schools, granting them 30 days to explain their position.

Upon reviewing the schools' replies, the CBSE took stringent actions based on the inspection reports and video evidence. Of the 27 schools inspected, 21 were disaffiliated for their involvement in practices that compromised the regular attendance requirement. Additionally, six schools faced downgrading from Senior Secondary to Secondary level due to similar violations. The CBSE highlighted that these actions serve as a clear signal to other affiliated institutions against engaging in such practices, which compromise the foundation of school education and holistic student development.
