CMFRI’s Initiative Aims to Tackle Climate Change Impact on Kerala's Fishing Communities
The ICAR-CMFRI is spearheading a campaign in Kerala's Ernakulam district to raise awareness about fishing and the impacts of climate change on fisheries.
In response to the growing threat of climate change on fishing communities, the ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) has launched a proactive initiative in Kerala's Ernakulam district.
Under the National Innovation in Climate Resilient Agriculture (NICRA) project, CMFRI scientists have embarked on an awareness campaign to educate fisherfolk about the science behind climate change and its profound effects on fisheries. This initiative aims to equip local communities with adaptation strategies to mitigate the impacts of climate change on their livelihoods.
The focal point of the awareness campaign is on two major fishing villages in the district, where scientists have engaged with fisherfolk to discuss the repercussions of increasing sea surface temperatures. These rising temperatures have led to the migration of economically significant fish stocks to cooler waters, resulting in a shift in fish distribution and a decline in fish catch.
Moreover, the escalation in temperatures has triggered a reduction in oxygen levels in inland water bodies, posing a significant threat to aquatic species and rendering them more susceptible to diseases.
During interactive sessions, members of the fishing communities voiced their concerns, including challenges related to inadequate marketing facilities and diminishing catch.
To address the pressing issue of decreasing the shelf life of locally harvested fish due to rising temperatures, CMFRI has taken tangible steps. As part of the initiative, the institute distributed ice boxes to fisherwomen. Additionally, essential fishing equipment such as gillnets, cast nets, pots, and sea bass fish seeds were provided to bolster fishing activities.
Through this comprehensive approach, CMFRI strives to empower fishing communities in Ernakulam district to navigate the challenges posed by climate change and ensure the sustainability of their livelihoods.
