Extreme Heatwaves Predicted in Upcoming Months; Concerns Raised for Crop Damage & Power Outages

Intense heat waves have been predicted in India for the upcoming months as winter and spring come to an end, raising worries about crop damage and strained power connectivity.

According to the weather forecast department, an increased likelihood of heat waves in the majority of the nation is expected during the upcoming period of three months ending May 31.

The weather service has predicted that the temperature in February was the highest measured since 1901 and that it will likely rise even further in March. The wheat harvest, which is already vulnerable, may suffer as a result of this.

Amid the climatic worries, the agriculture ministry has established a panel to monitor the effect on the wheat crop, which is anticipated to reach a record this year, after an early onset of hot weather drove energy demand to almost record levels.

The World Bank's 'Climate Investment Opportunities in India's Cooling Sector' report from December of last year stated that the nation is experiencing higher temperatures that arrive earlier and stay for longer periods of time.

According to the study, deadly heat waves, which have killed thousands of people in India over the past few decades, are happening more frequently than ever before. Soon, India may be one of the first countries in the world to experience heat waves that are too intense for humans to survive.

India experienced a punishing early spring heat wave in April 2022 that brought the nation to a halt and caused temperatures in the capital, New Delhi, to rise to 46 degrees Celsius. The report claimed that March was the hottest month ever documented due to unusual temperature spikes.
