Farmers Protest Update: SKM Will Deliberate on the Future Course of Action Today

The Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), which has spearheaded the farmers' protest, will meet on Saturday to deliberate on the future course of action. 

SKM the coalition of around 40 farmers' organisations that has spearheaded the kisans protest, issued six demands to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in an open letter on November 21. The farmers' group has warned to continue its protest if the demands are not fulfilled. 

"After their meeting at the Singhu Border, the SKM (Samyukt Kisan Morcha) wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In this letter, SKM emphasized that the prime minister has chosen a path of unilateral proclamation of the government's decision to repeal the three farm laws over a bilateral settlement, but it also welcomed the announcement "According to a statement issued by the SKM. 

The letter reminded PM Modi that the withdrawal of the three agri Acts (The Farmers Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020, The Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020, and The Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020) was not the only demand by the agitating farmers, and that there were three others. 

In addition to a statutory guarantee of minimum support price (MSP) and the withdrawal of the Electricity Amendment Bill, the SKM wants lawsuits against farmers dismissed and a memorial built for protestors who died during the protest. 

The SKM has remained steadfast in its demands after Prime Minister Modi said on November 19 that the government will repeal the three contentious agriculture laws enacted by Parliament in September 2020. 

PM Modi told the nation on the occasion of the sacred Guru Purab and the re-opening of the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor, "Today I have come to tell you, the whole country, that we have decided to remove all three agricultural laws. We will finish the constitutional process to repeal these three agriculture laws during the Parliament session that begins later this month."
