Farmers Worried by Poor Power Supply & No Rain
Farmers are having a difficult time with power supply at unusual hours and occasionally for a short period of time
Indian farmers are displeased by the lack of adequate power supply for irrigation and rising temperatures.
Farmers are left without any choice since the state has not received rainfall during this winter season. Farmers are now obligated to irrigate the wheat crops to provide moisture to the fields. Farmers are having a difficult time with power supply at unusual hours and occasionally for a short period of time.
"Instead of the eight hours of power we were promised, we are only receiving five to six hours, which is insufficient for us. In addition to the government's lack of adequate electricity supply, the weather god was already not in our favour” according to farmer Swarnjeet Singh of Ghulal village.
Farmers were getting an inadequate amount of water according to Balbir Singh Rajewal, the head of the Farm Union. "The government had promised to provide us with free electricity for eight hours, but we are getting it for only five to six hours. Sometimes, we get electricity for ten straight hours, following a day without any power. It is crucial for farmers to know the time of power supply so that they can prepare and make their plan for irrigation in advance.
“What is the use of providing electricity at night when farmers are unable to irrigate their fields? The timings of the electricity supply should be fixed as soon as possible” according to Samroop Singh, a farmer from Manewal village.
The farmers were already disappointed by no rain but now the government had neglected to provide electricity for the predetermined period mentioned HS Lakhowal from Samrala and general secretary of the Bhartiya Kisan Union.
Since the crops are in urgent need of irrigation, the power supply should be fixed as soon as possible, he added.
